Aaron McGruder Biography
Illinois-born writer, producer, screenwriter, lecturer and cartoonist, Aaron McGruder, is best known for his contributions to writing and drawing The Boondocks, the Universal Press Syndicate comic strip, and his animated TV series adaptation, for which he was the creator, executive producer, and head writer.
Aaron McGruder Education
He enrolled and attended the Jesuit school, Loyola Blakefield, from grades seven to nine. Following two years of torturous racism he left the school and transferred to public high school, Oakland Mills High School. He graduated with a degree in African American Studies from the University of Maryland.
Aaron McGruder Boondocks
In 1996 Mr. McGruder started writing The Boondocks, which began as a webcomic on Hitlist.com, which is considered to be one of the first online music websites. The University of Maryland’s newspaper, The Boondocks, published it as a comic strip in their newspaper The Diamondback.
In 1999, he signed an agreement with the Universal Press Syndicate, and in April of the same year he began appearing in 160 newspapers. The Boondocks were two prominent figures of African-American descent. The brothers were Huey (named after Huey P. Newton) and his younger brother, Riley.
Boondocks received a positive response and in six months the comic strip was distributed to more than 200 publications. Over the years, five The Boondocks collections have been released, called All The Rage, Public Enemy #2,A Right To Be Hostile, Fresh for’ 01: You Suckaz, and Boondocks: Since I Know You Don’t Read The Newspaper.

The animated TV series adaptation of the strip proved successful on the Adult Swim Cartoon Network. In March 2014, The Boondocks was revived for a new season, but without McGruder’s involvement as its show-runner. The first episode of the fourth season was broadcast for the first time on April 21, 2014.
The cartoonist took public domain to mark the return of Boondocks for another season in May 2019.
