Mel Senen Sarmiento’s name has been trending on the internet since Kris Aquino verified on Instagram that the “special someone” she wished on his birthday was, in fact, the former DILG Secretary.
Sarmiento was Cabinet Secretary under Aquino’s brother, the recently deceased Benigno Simeon Noynoy Aquino 3rd.
He was only in office for a year, from 2015 to 2016, and had previously served as Mayor and Vice Mayor of Calbayog City from 2004 to 2011.

Sarmiento was born in Manila to Engr. Oscar Sarmiento and Teresita Sevilla of Roxas City.
From 1992 until 1995, he served as vice mayor of Calbayog City City.
Before that, he was an active member of the Samar Rotary Club.
After failing to win the mayoralty the following term, he took a six-year hiatus from politics, during which he operated his own construction company.
He stood for and was elected Mayor of Calbayog City from 2004 to 2010.
He then took over as Mayor in place of Congressmen Uy and Aquino. He also served as Secretary-General of the League of Cities of the Philippines.
