Paul Kitching Obituary

Paul Kitching was a Michelin-starred chef. He was raised in Gateshed. Paul’s culinary career began in a Latin American restaurant in Newcastle before he moved to York, where he discovered his passion for cooking.

He opened Juniper restaurant in Manchester and was awarded a Michelin star in 1997, which he kept for 11 years.

In 2008, the talented chef opened 21212 in Edinburgh with his partner Katie, and it was awarded a Michelin star between 2009 and 2019.

In addition to a Michelin star, the restaurant has won numerous awards, including best new restaurant in the UK, four AA rosettes, and Catering in Scotland’s Restaurant of the Year.

Paul was also given the Prince Philip medal for his contributions to the catering industry.

He’d been in the service industry for 35 years, and prior to working in restaurants, he had brief stints as a baker and a labourer.

Paul Kitching died tragically at the age of 61, on Wednesday, December 14th 2022, according to his devastated partner Katie O’Brien. In a statement, the Michelin Guide described Paul as a ‘true maverick’.
