In addition to being a famous American cartoonist and sculptor, William Steig was also an artist and writer of popular children’s books in his latter years. He died on October 3, 2003, at the age of 91. Abel’s Island, Doctor De Soto, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, and Abel’s Island are some of his best-known picture books, but he is also renowned as the author of Shrek!, which was the inspiration for the film series of the same name. He was the United States’ candidate for both the biannual worldwide Hans Christian Andersen Awards, first as an artist of children’s books in 1982 and then as a writer in 1988.
