In the 1990s, William Zabka moved his concentration to production, but he continued to act in films such as “Shootfighter,” “The Power Within,” and “Interceptors” on an irregular basis. He developed and produced the Academy Award-nominated short film “Most” in 2003.
Zabka has also attempted to direct music videos. He just returned to acting after a long absence, making an appearance in an episode of “How I Met Your Mother.”
Zabka has worked as a commercial director for well-known companies such as Verizon and Little Tikes. In 2017, Zabka and Ralph Macchio offered a revived series based on their “Karate Kid” characters to a group of producers.
Multiple studios, including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Apple, made bids, but YouTube Red was finally chosen as the winning bidder. For the first two seasons, both Zabka and Macchio reportedly got $100,000 every episode, totaling nearly $1 million per season per individual.
They serve as co-executive producers on the project, which is supervised by Will Smith’s business, Overbrook Productions after the rights were licensed by Jerry Weintraub’s Weintraub Entertainment Group.
The series’ first season premiered in May 2018. It received critical acclaim but struggled with viewing at first due to its exclusive distribution on YouTube Red, a site with a small subscriber base.
